They Came In – Butthole Surfers

A weird mix of industrial, stoner rock and punk, The Butthole Surfers lurked at the back of alternative for over a decade looking like they were going to make their move at one point or another.

Standing at the back making the music scene nervous however was The Butthole Surfers move. And they nailed it.

From the mid 80’s until their only real commercial success in 1996 with Pepper, they hung around like a dirty sinister noise with diminished responsibilities.

They Came In is hypnotic, groovy, heavy and drenched in feedback and noise. It’s an acquired taste which seems a little more tame than it used to back in the simpler late days of the last century. Even though in 2017 it’s shadow has some light thrown over it, They Came In is still a tiny bit unnerving and pretty dirty sounding.

Big Black, Flipper, Helmet, Faith No More, Nirvana and Soundgarden all had a strand of Butthole Surfers in their sound. Weirdo’s but very fertile weirdos.
