Wade In The Water – Golden Gate Quartet

I have no idea how this track got on my iPod. It’s a recording from the 1940’s of a vocal group singing gospel music. I have no recollection of ever thinking, ‘this playlist needs a little churching up’.

There’s a strange churning rhythm in The Golden Gate Quartets voices when they harmonise. Then they each take turns to do a verse. The annunciation is over ripe and unnaturally proper. This and the flat crackly overall sound adds to the ;otherness’ of the whole thing. It might be the earliest recording I own.

Apparently the track comes from a release called Radio Transcriptions 1941-1944. It’s amazing. It’s like my iTunes is haunted.
