“There was a little girl who had a little curl right in the middle of her forehead”. Melissa’s own mother gets the coda on Auf der Maur’s opening track. Sealing the deal and setting the tone for a heavy progressive record not afraid to rock out and throw shapes but indebted to the artier end of the genre.
Before we follow the waves of an album ten years in the making through all the slinky, luxurious and seductive avenues the following tracks have to offer, there’s this elemental storm of an opener to contend with.
Atmospheric verve and squealing weeeooohhs clang into a vintage grunge riff. Her time in Tinder, Smashing Pumpkins and Hole serves the record well before the full histrionics of the guitar soar over that guttural bass line.
This is a high end take on the down tuned genre. Equal parts Riot Grrrl and Posh Girl playing dress up. A halfway house between yacht rock and desert session.
And it’s sexy as hell.
