One of the major records in 2017 for me was the Mastodon album in which they fully embraced power chords and choruses, Emperor Of Sand.
There are a few numbers on EOS which the Mastodon of Leviathan and Crack The Syke would not have recognised as themselves. Closer in sound to Screaming Trees or Soundgarden than the metal titans previous bench marks. Show Yourself is the closest thing Mastodon have to a hit single
“Show yourself, show yourself I want to see everything you’re made of, Tear it down, rip it out shed your skin and float it down the river, lose yourself, lose yourself wild horses ride you through the valley, come alive, come alive sail into the void without your worries”
Lyrically for Mastodon this is practically ‘Baby you’re a firework’ and the big open sound and positivity makes the listening experience all the better for it.
The band have recognised they need all matter of light and shade in their palate to grow as a proper big all things to all men band. This isn’t in any way selling out, this is having layers.
The fact that Emperor Of Sand was followed with a Beyond Magnetic style EP six months later has been suspected by some cynics as acknowledgement they sent panic through the stables of their hardcore fans and needed to redress a balance. I see the Cold Dark Place EP as just more great music.
I mean stone me, you’ve only got to get to the end of the song before everything is suitably metallish again
“Show yourself, show yourself I wanna see everything you’re made of, reveal yourself, reveal yourself the truth will send a ripple through your body, seal your fate, you’ll see your fate death will come and steal you from the living, dead and gone, dead and gone, I’ll see you on the other side of fire”
The Bill and Ted style (or if we’re being cultured The Seventh Seal) Death’s bad day at the office video is a real treat too. Dig in.
