Pissing Blood – Shogun And The Sheets

If you’ve heard of Shogun’s old band Royal Headache you’ve got a mental aural idea of what you think you might get with his new band. When you hear the song title ‘Pissing Blood’ that might confirm that mental aural image in the minds ear (I am going to make it a thing). Fast irreverent punk rock by a band who shoot promo shots in front of chain link fences and wear their guitars around the knees of their pale blue jeans.

If you have played along so far, if you know the sort of punk rock and roll I’m describing. Skip the rest of this write up and play the link below.

I for one was not expecting a soulful ballad sung like some Joe Cocker, Jeff Buckley, huge voice showcase type song. I wasn’t expecting guitars full of long sustained notes and reverb and echo chamber and the sort of echoes that would sound great in classic theaters or shows played in chapels. It’s not a new kind of rock and roll but it is not what I expected from the voice of Royal Headache.

Shogun And The Sheets are not Royal Headache 2. That makes me happy. Not that I didn’t want more Royal Headache. I liked them a lot. Shogun And The Sheets are not even grown up punk rock. They’re a full on rock and roll band with more diversity in the two tracks of their debut seven inch single than you’d be lead to expect by your own tricky minds ear (it is practically a real thing at this point, don’t fight it. get in early)

I’m gonna post the other track Hold On Kid right here to illustrate my point

It’s got honkey tonk piano and organ swathes that pitch it in the same bandcamp stage as Franz era The Hold Steady and other E Street influenced punks. It’s the A-Side. They put the big soulful vocal one on the flip side. What is going on?

Speaking of Bandcamps. You can find Shogun and The Sheets doing their business end of the bargain here.

I recommend you check them out. I’m eagerly waiting news of an album.
