Speaking of Starcrawler. Fuck my old boots! They made a sleazy rock noise with that bloodied debut album back in January. So the Award for *ahem* ‘Filling The Void In Our Lives Left By Jon Spencer Blues Explosion and It’s Various Side Projects’ gets a direct via satellite link up to Camp Starcrawler.
Pussy Tower hit me on the first listen as ‘like something from Boss Hog or The Cramps’. It’s an old school garage rock noise tied to a one two hit vocal from Arrow and Austin. It also stood out because that’s not the sort of chorus you can casually listen to in polite company. So it’s a good job most of my friends are degenerates.
I featured the gargantuan single Let Her Be on SteveForTheDeaf back in January and I called it the first great new record of 2018 (I also started the review with the same ‘And the award goes to…’ schtick as these last two posts, so the limits of my writing are literally creaking at the seams here).
Within the week of hearing Let Her Be I’d bought that album with the striking ‘Andrew WK’s sister at her Quinceañera’ cover photo and I played the heck out of it over the span of 2018. Killer other single I Love LA had it’s eyes on the indie dance floor alongside Bodega, Wolf Alice and Dream Wife and back in the summer they did the festival circuit promoting Chicken Woman and we all danced.
I’m tagging Love’s Gone Again on the end of this post as well because it deserves just as much attention as that ‘Give me head’ chorus does. They really nailed this rock and roll thing these kids. Give them a hand.
