Viagra Boys (feat Amy Taylor) – In Spite Of Ourselves

There are several things the band Viagra Boys are not.

This band are not American. They are also not The Butthole Surfers. They are not from the 80’s. They are not to be missed out on. They are also not faking any of this. This is modern European post punk, punk rock. In all but authorship. The song (and it’s disturbingly low rent video) nail a certain Redneckery. From another continent. Or two other continents, neither of which is Amer… (Zzzzz We in__er__t this broad__st) For a laugh. In Spite Of Ourselves is a cover version. Amy Taylor, you will already know (if you’ve been paying attention) as the lead vocalist of Aussie punk sweethearts Amyl and The Sniffers. Her contribution to this track cannot be undervalued. This is a modern kitsch filth flecked masterpiece that John Waters would have creased his slacks to be involved in. A sort of Islands In The Stream if the stream was behind an industrial estate and has a shopping trolley dumped in it.

Originally a John Prine track (those who know, know) this song was release in tribute when The Viagra Boys and Amyl Amy came together to pay their respects to the alt country pioneer. Prine’s lyrics remain intact as an absurdist almost surreal comedy. There’s a decadence and a white trash honesty to this duet that recalls Fairytale Of New York in some ways and has been cited by Peaches as influence for her Teaches of (Zzzzz We are cal___ from the year___99) t’s blistering duet with Iggy Pop Kick It.

If you want the real measure of Viagra Boys listen to Ain’t Nice (from Shrimp Sessions 2) or their debut album Street Worms. Their lead singer looks like a small town high street version of legendary Brit-punk firebrand Frank Carter. The band look awkward and cool in the same moment. Their wiry rhythm almost (Zzzz Codename Blaze Of____ Are you reading Me___ Zzzz) If that don’t do it for ya there’s a 2021 long player out there for your current consideration. It’s called Welfare Jazz. So on album titles we’re two for two already.

They’re a little bit Ian Dury and The Blockheads. They’re a little bit The Pogues. They’re a little bit dEus and a lot Gibby Haines and his Surfer pals. I like this band. (Zzzz This is a wr n___ Bro cast __m the future ___ the Killer B___ are comi Zzzzz) I like how awkward they make everyone (including me) feel. That’s the Post-punk way. Never cooperative, always odd and yet identifiable and genuine.

Viagra Boys may hail from Sweden and throw in a Sax solo or a glockenspiel where most bands would put a guitar lick or a drum fill but they make music that fits the times. This grimaced smile caked karaoke take on a bonkers country duet is so off, it is bang on.
