We did a thing (I did a thing) it was reckless and I didn’t consider the finite amount of time given to the mortals of the Blogosphere. I posted a Bruce Springsteen take on someone else’s song. Not that wacky you might think. Bruce is Bruce. He covers stuff all the time. What would be unusual about covering a song I then natter about? Especially if I was at the gig the recording was made at?
“London calling to the faraway towns, Now war is declared and battle come down”
Indeed Springsteen’s London Calling DVD is a cherished memory involving online fraud and last minute rides into the badlands to score tickets. But I took London Calling by The Clash and reduced it to a tale about Steve being slow to buy tickets. It’s London Calling. The title track of the masterpiece of the punk genre. The call to arms for cockneys to rock out with their cockles out*.
“London calling, now don’t look to us, phony Beatlemania has bitten the dust, London calling, see we ain’t got no swing, except for the ring of the truncheon thing”
The respect between Joe and Bruce for their truthful versions of what rock and roll could be (should be) is well documented. Literally. The documents are like archaeological finds.
From the desk of Joe Strummer:
“Here’s my contribution
“BRUCE IS GREAT… IF YOU DONT AGREE WITH THAT YOU’RE A PRETENTIOUS MARTIAN FROM VENUS. BRUCE LOOKS GREAT… LIKE HE’S ABOUT TO CRAWL UNDERNEATH THE CHORDS WITH A SPANNER & SOCK THE STARTER MOTOR ONE TIME SO THAT A ENGINE STARTS UP – HUMMING & READY TO TAKE US ON A GOLDEN RIDE WAY OUT SOMEWHERE IN THE YONDER… BRUCE IS GREAT… BECAUSE HE’LL NEVER LAY DOWN & BE CONQUERED BY HIS PROBLEMS HE’S ALLWAYS READY TO BUST OUT the SHACK & HIT THE TRACK… HIS MUSIC IS GREAT ON A DARK & RAINY MORNING IN ENGLAND, JUST WHEN YOU NEED SOME SPIRIT & SOME PROOF THAT THE BIG WIDE WORLD EXISTS, THE D.J. PUTS ON “RACING IN THE STREETS” & LIFE SEEMS WORTH LIVING AGAIN… LIFE SEEMS TO BE IN CINEMASCOPE AGAIN. BRUCE IS NOT ON AN EGO TRIP… BRUCE IS ACTUALLY INTO THE MUSIC… WE NEED PEOPLE LIKE THIS… A LOT OF RECORDS TODAY ARE MADE BY PEOPLE JUST TO FEED THEIR FAME. BRUCE IS GREAT… THERE AINT NO WHINGING WHINING OR COMPLAINING.. THERE’S ONLY GREAT MUSIC, LYRICS & AN OCEAN OF TALENT. ME? I LOVE SPRINGSTEEN!!!
“(Signed, ‘Joe Strummer’):
London Calling might be the anthem of The Clash’s entire career (along side all the other Clash anthems posted in the past). It might also be the first of several undisputed punk rock classics that were originally posted here as cover versions now restored to their original version on day six before the meteor hits.
“Come out of the cupboard you Boys and Girls”
*Niche bit of London humour there. About seafood.
