Straight Outta Compton – N.W.A

Did your parents ever let you have one present the night before at Christmas?

Just a little something to set the tone for the coming seasonal celebration?

Here you go kid, Happy Halloween

When I posted this before it was an ironic fill in minute and a half acoustic folk joke. Nina Gordon (of the Indie Rock Royalty Gordon’s) giving you a little ditty which is perfect for when there isn’t enough space on the end of a mixtape for a full length song.

Admittedly she only does Ice Cube’s first verse over some plucked strings. As smirk inducing as it is hearing his words made beautiful by the songbird equivalent of Mary Hopkins singing a version of The Aristocrats these words have real power.

Gangster rap is not all anger (is this still even that?), phobia and obscenity. Don’t let the tabloids fool you again. This was a cry of pain. Rage of the abandoned howling at a system designed to fuck them over again and again. Gang culture only works if the belonging it offers is more appealing than the mainstream alternative. Straight Outta Compton is the Los Angeles London Calling. It’d be even more scary if it wasn’t so fucking funky.

This might be the greatest Hip Hop anthem of all time. Let’s have it right eh?

Number eleven in a top ten that starts after it should have finished but somehow begins early with (keep up, keep up)

Straight Outta Compton by N.W.A.

Am I setting a tone here? Once covered… now posted in it’s original form… Tomorrow is Halloween…
