Smells Like Teen Spirit – Nirvana

You need me to explain? Fine. I’ve got numbers for you. Stat. Smells Like Teen Spirit is the most covered song on SteveForTheDeaf*. It’s the biggest selling and most popular song of the definitional grunge band. When I was sixteen Nirvana killed hair metal dead over one weekend and launched the 90’s biggest rock revolution. She’s over-bored and self-assured. Oh no, I know a dirty word. It will be the most posted song on SFTD if I post the original version. Which of course I’m going to. You saw the headline first right?

OK, first time we posted the Patti Smith cover version. That’s a bit of a coup isn’t it? Patti Smith. Springsteen hit maker, Stones coverer (We’ll get to that, well, sort of) not to mention (but I’m gonna mention) the high priestess of punk. Covering Teen Spirit. Niiiice.

Second time it was Nirvana Week. And we (I say we, there is no we. It was all me) didn’t even let Nirvana have a crack at their biggest song during Nirvana Week. Nope. I let a bunch of school kids have it. A school choir. Scala. I’m worse at what I do best and for this gift I feel blessed. I crow barred in Weird Al and threatened you all with a version by Take That. I feel stupid and contagious.

Nevermind turned 30 last month. I turn another year closer to 50 next month. So the maths all works out. For kids my age (I’m aware of the irony) we’re bang on target. Load up on guns and bring your friends.

We’ll be parting ways today though, you and I. Time marches on. Before I take my leave. Once more ‘fore we part. Let me take one last opportunity to say Hello, hello, hello, hello, hello

Number Four on the topper most of the popper most Ten Ta Ten Ten Tennnn!

  1. I remember that weekend. Same age, same time, like a whirlwind sweeping away the likes of Motley Crue and TigerTailz in one foul swoop.

Feels similar in saying hello, hello, hello and goodbye to SFTD. Hoping it’s a small hiatus rather than goodnight sweetheart.

‘So long and thanks for all the fish’.
