Hot Women (Cold Beer) – Goober And The Peas

That’s a bass line and no mistake.

Them’s some lyrics. Some “what’s wrong with being sexy?” lyrics. The trouble with this type of rock song is it’s damn near impossible to tell the irony from the idiocy. There’s just a nudge (and possibly a wink) between Frank Zappa’s Titties & Beer or Spiñal Tap’s Big Bottom and Mötley Crüe’s genuine oeuvre. An ironic moronic rock song is a hall-pass for sexism to play in the open.

Goober And The Peas will be remembered with a whiff of novelty to their tuneage because of the big ten gallon hats and the side gags. Boy could that band wail though.

Really only one step further along the line than Reverend Horton Heat or Mojo Nixon their southern rock was less boogie and more slinky. Still, with a name like that and song titles like this, you’re on the wrong side of history fellas. Dammit! They sure could rock even if they acted like cocks. The rock paradigm.

Cowpunk has come up here before. With Jason & The Scorchers and to a degree Georgia Satellites I am relatively sure that it will come up again.

Goober And The Peas evolved into Blanche during The New Rock Revolution™. They came to the UK as a support to Jack and Meg’s White Stripes in those heady Astoria days. They put out two quality albums in their new guise. Still country, still punk, but also indie, edgy and gothic. There was a blinding Gun Club cover on one album. A hidden Van Halen cover too.

But before they were cool, they were Goobers.
